Zen Cinema

Anyone looking to incorporate Zen minimalism in a home theater might want to talk to Keith Willis and Jon Heberling, partners in a company called Innovative Theatres in Santa Monica, Calif. The pair has actually created, as one in a lineup of pre-engineered and pre-designed rooms, a prototype they named “The Zen” that not only fits the design bill but also calls for minimally invasive construction. It can be scaled up or down, depending upon the size of a client’s existing room, then manufactured off-site, delivered in a tuck and assembled on-site in one to tow weeks.

“We design opulent theaters but also enjoy de=engineering opulence all the way down to the simplistic look we had in mind for The Zen. It’s easy to go over the top,” says Willis, a one-time music design major at UCLA. Partner Heberling is one certification test away from being a licensed architect, and both have backgrounds in fine art.

The pair first conceived of pre-designed theaters as options for multimillion-dollar southern California tract homes. But they install their creations across the country and also design custom theaters, which they say take six months to finish and often create a nasty mess. “Ours snap together, “points out Heberling, about the pre-designed models.

A client can select a theater room with fixtures and choices that include tow levels of visual and audio, all THX-certified, with JBL Synthesis audio systems, a variety of 70 leather choices, 50 fabrics and an adjustable color palette.

For the Zen, any design element that the partners could strip away, they did “It’s more of a massage experience,” Willis explains.

Instead of traditional recliner seats, they decided on cushioned sofas for lounging or, perhaps, for viewing or working out to a yoga video. Fabrics are all natural in earthy colors, and carpet is a sisal look-alike made from nylon so it is softer to the touch. There is no curtain; flat walls abut either side of the perforated screen. Anyone who wants to sit in the room and simply listen to music or meditate can digitally reproduce on screen a favorite painting or, for instance, a soothing image of a verdant bamboo forest.

When designers Willis and Heberling want to add a little extra drama to a home theater, they do it with lighting. The Zen’s walls tilt outward about 10 degrees, there is no cornice, and the ceiling is a soft, curvilinear soundboard structure. “It would suggest a stream, like a Zen rock garden,” Heberling says.

The stairs are lit and more light-imbedded in panels and glowing from beneath the sofa platforms-creates an ethereal, floating quality to the entire room. “Even if it is minimal,” says Willis, “there has to be a ‘wow’ somewhere.”
