Just the right fit

A tow-hour feature film can seem like eternity in an uncomfortable seat. In that sense, buying properly designed seating for a home theater is more important than getting the right chair for the dining room or office, where you can fidget at will. And home-theaters seating doesn’t stop at the chair. Think of it as merely the platform for a galaxy of bells and whistles.

For instance, Home Cinema Accessories offers a trio of trays: an octagonal wooden snack try that clips onto any chair arm ($30), a plastic tray that fits into an armrest’s cup holder ($27), and a stainless-steel serving tray with an elegant film-strip railing complete with sprocket holes ($195).

Fortress Seating offers embellishments that include a console table with storage compartment” a retractable touch-screen mount and compartments to house gaming devices; a variable massage and heat unit; and hidden compartment such as a flip-top armrest.

There’s also an entire home-theater cottage industry devoted to tactile transducers, which tap into the sound system’s bass output to shake your seat during action sequences. As an option of Innovative Theatres’ Motion works Home Cinema chair, for instance, you can specify the Butt Kicker 2($399).

With its chrome feet, leather upholstery and sleek, Euro-style look, The Monroe chair makes an imposing club or lounge chair. Only the stainless-steel cup holders recessed in the arms suggest that the Monroe is intended as home-theater seating. The three-position headrest is standard. Options included a tray table in a choice of nine woods and a push-button motorized recline mechanism.

Things You Should Know:

If space is tight, “zero wall’ reclining seats require only about seven inches of clea4ance form the back wall or next row.

Overstuffed chairs don’t guarantee comfort. You’ll feel fine in a thinly upholstered chair if it has proper lumbar support and a waterfall edge (cushioning at the front seat edge that prevents compression of nerves and blood vessels under the knees).

If you install seats that recline, make sure they have high backs or headrests.
